New improved BoB launching January 2014

A new version of Box of Broadcasts (BoB) - the online off-air TV and radio recording service – is due to be launched on 6 January 2014. The service is being upgraded as the result of a project between BUFVC, JISC and the BBC. Planned changes include a fresh look and feel together with improved searching and navigation. There will also be new content, including access to more than 800,000 new BBC TV and radio programmes from the BBC archive and an additional 13 foreign language channels.

As this is a substantial upgrade, BoB will be offline from 13 to 23 December 2013 to prepare for the new system. This means that you will not be able to access BoB during this period. The new system should be available over the Christmas holiday period, but will be unsupported prior to the official launch in January.

For more information on the upgrade, see 'BoB National is getting an upgrade' or follow @bufvc_bob on Twitter to keep up to date with the latest news on the launch.

MyPC Booking service

CiCS have taken the decision to turn off the MyPC booking service. In the last few weeks they have received numerous reports of this system logging students out, causing an increasing risk of the loss of unsaved work.
This means that the following computers within the Library can no longer be prebooked:
Information Commons - all levels
Western Bank Library - Level 6
St. George's Library - PCs 31 to 42

Please note that we do have a Laptop loan service available at all sites; Please see http://www.shef.ac.uk/cics/laptoploans/ic for more details.

For more information on this decision and any future updates,  please see the CiCS blog http://www.shef.ac.uk/cics/news

Latest version of EndNote now available

EndNote X7, the latest version of the EndNote Desktop reference management software, is now available to all students and staff on the CiCS Managed Desktop. If you can't see EndNote X7 on the managed desktop PC you're using, you may need to install it from the Software Center. This is easy to do and CiCS have produced a video to show you how. (Similarly, if the managed desktop PC you're using already has the previous version of EndNote - X5 - installed and you want to use X7, just install EndNote X7 from the Software Center as above and the software will update.)

If you've registered for the online version of EndNote, you can now sync your account with the EndNote X7 software to get access to unlimited online reference storage, thousands of bibliographic styles, and 5GB of file storage. See our EndNote Online page for details.

Remember that the Library can offer you help and support with EndNote Online, including a self-study workbook, which is available in the Information Skills Resource. For general help and advice with EndNote, we recommend the Thomson Reuters EndNote Community Forum. It's also worth checking the Thomson Reuters EndNote knowledgebase for answers to your questions.

Landmap seek alternative funding

Landmap, the geospatial datasets service, faces an uncertain future following recent funding changes. JISC funding will maintain Landmap until the end of December 2013, which includes helpdesk and workshop support as well as access to datasets and updates to e-learning content.

From 1 January 2014 to 31 July 2014 Landmap datasets and e-learning content will remain online but with no helpdesk support or updates to content. If you plan to use a Landmap dataset for your undergraduate or postgraduate dissertation, Landmap are advising that you get the data you need before 31 July 2014 as data availability can't be guaranteed after that.

JISC and MIMAS are currently looking for alternative funding. See JISC Funding Cut – Update for New Academic Year 2013/14 for more information or follow @Landmap on Twitter for the latest news.

The University Library goes live with Ex Libris Alma

Late on Thursday June 20 the University Library went live with our new library management system Alma, from the leading global supplier of library management systems, ExLibris.  The Library has been working as an “early adopter” of Alma, enabling us to participate in development and testing.  Going live with Alma places us amongst the leaders in the UK in moving our systems to next-generation cloud-based solutions.

Director of Library Services & University Librarian Martin Lewis said: “This is an important moment in the continuing development and improvement of our library services.  Alma will underpin many of our operations and workflows, bringing greater efficiency and resilience, and providing a stable platform for the delivery of new services in the future. Getting to this point has required a huge team effort by many people in the University Library, and I’d like to thank them for their commitment and enthusiasm.”

Alma has replaced a number of previously separate systems, and offers an integrated approach to the management of print and digital collections, workflows to improve the efficiency of services and improved capabilities for usage and demand analysis.

New exhibition, Western Bank Library

"So when tha cooms to Yorkshire, don't be tekken for a fool'.
Yorkshire Voices explores what it means to write in the local dialect.
Based on archive material generously donated by authors and their families, this exhibition celebrates the work of four very different writers: novelist Arthur Eaglestone, pitman and poet Tom Hague, novelist and playwright Barry Hines, singer and poet Cathy Lovett.  Each writes about a different time and a different part of Yorkshire, and their reasons for writing differ.  But each captures something about the people of Yorkshire and the way they speak.

Jack Rosenthal and Maureen Lipman

The Western Bank Library exhibition from June 2012 - Jack and Maureen: a creative partnership - has been transferred to the Manchester Jewish Museum in Manchester, and will run until 9th June. It includes many items from the Jack Rosenthal and Maureen Lipman archives, both of which are held by the Special Collections Department in the University of Sheffield Library. Further details can be found at http://www.mjm.org.uk/exhibitions

Also in Manchester, and using one of the scripts from the Jack Rosenthal Drama Scripts Collection here at Sheffield, Gareth Kavanagh has put on a production of “The Best” at the Lass O’Gowrie pub. This is Jack Rosenthal’s previously unproduced play about the footballer George Best. In the past, Gareth has put on productions based on Jack Rosenthal’s early Coronation Street scripts, two of which were shown at the launch of the Jack and Maureen exhibition here last year. Further information can be found at http://www.thelass.co.uk/index.php and on the BBC website at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21741182

Changes in StarPlus

We are working in the background to improve our library systems. You can now place a reservation within StarPlus, from the 'Request' tab. However, to see the total number of copies available of a particular book, you need to click on the 'Details' tab and then the 'This item in classic Star' link on the right hand side. This is a temporary measure until we upgrade further in the next few months.

The Chatsworth Library Project

As a result of a successful bid for a Collaborative R&D and Partnership Award, Dr Jack Rhoden from the School of History (and one of the Library’s porters!) was employed to devise and manage the Chatsworth Library Project, part of which entails researching and cataloguing a representative portion of the 30,000 rare books. As the Rare Books Librarian, I have been engaged to help and advise Jack on this initial task and to review the challenges presented in bringing the Devonshire Collection catalogue up to current international standards, and ensure that any future research projects are cognisant of cataloguing issues.

I go to Chatsworth one day a month up until the end of May, by which time, Jack and I will have produced basic rare book catalogue entries for up to 400 hitherto unrecorded items from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries; and created enhanced records of a cross-discipline selection of items from the main Chatsworth library.

On my first day at the end of November 2012, James Towe, the Chatsworth archivist, and Jack, showed me round the libraries including the stunning library that you can see in Jack’s monthly blog and where the public is not allowed to enter. It was such a privilege to browse the shelves of this truly stunning private library and to see the great treasures among it.

This six month project is a huge task for Jack, but I hope the discoveries we make will enable a great future partnership in research between our academics from all departments and faculties, and Chatsworth.
