The University Library goes live with Ex Libris Alma

Late on Thursday June 20 the University Library went live with our new library management system Alma, from the leading global supplier of library management systems, ExLibris.  The Library has been working as an “early adopter” of Alma, enabling us to participate in development and testing.  Going live with Alma places us amongst the leaders in the UK in moving our systems to next-generation cloud-based solutions.

Director of Library Services & University Librarian Martin Lewis said: “This is an important moment in the continuing development and improvement of our library services.  Alma will underpin many of our operations and workflows, bringing greater efficiency and resilience, and providing a stable platform for the delivery of new services in the future. Getting to this point has required a huge team effort by many people in the University Library, and I’d like to thank them for their commitment and enthusiasm.”

Alma has replaced a number of previously separate systems, and offers an integrated approach to the management of print and digital collections, workflows to improve the efficiency of services and improved capabilities for usage and demand analysis.

Further information about services during the transition period is available from  http://www.shef.ac.uk/library/libnews/starplus

New exhibition, Western Bank Library

"So when tha cooms to Yorkshire, don't be tekken for a fool'.
Yorkshire Voices explores what it means to write in the local dialect.
Based on archive material generously donated by authors and their families, this exhibition celebrates the work of four very different writers: novelist Arthur Eaglestone, pitman and poet Tom Hague, novelist and playwright Barry Hines, singer and poet Cathy Lovett.  Each writes about a different time and a different part of Yorkshire, and their reasons for writing differ.  But each captures something about the people of Yorkshire and the way they speak.

Digimap Carto

Digimap are withdrawing the Carto mapping application on 31 July 2013 as it has become increasingly difficult to maintain due to outdated technology. Digimap have been developing the Roam mapping application and it now offers much of the functionality previously offered only by Carto. There are also plans to add further functionality to Roam over the coming months. Read more about these changes on the Digimap blog or follow @EDINA_Digimap on Twitter for the latest updates.
